The History Of Taxi Cabs

Taxis have been among the most common transportation options for years. What makes this unique is that it has been used in some form for centuries well before it became used in its current form. The history of taxi cabs spreads many centuries and countries and has shown how valuable this option has been in the field of transportation.

The first taxis were not vehicles but rather horse drawn carriages. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in parts of England many carriage services would offer services for hire for getting to various different areas of the land. This was especially the case in London for the more astute people in the city. In 1635 the Hackney Carriage Act was passed in England as a means of controlling services for these taxi services. This has been around in many forms and is still used in some areas for their luxury and old fashioned appeal.

During the later part of the nineteenth century battery powered vehicles that had been used as a new form of transportation became popular. However, it would not be until the invention of the taximeter around this time when these vehicles became seriously considered for taxi services. Taxi companies began to be formed throughout Europe and had been used with a variety of battery powered vehicles. With the advent of gasoline powered vehicles these cabs became more commonly used for taxis. These transportation options were even being painted yellow as a means of helping to get people to identify these taxis from other vehicles. Because yellow is not commonly used for standard vehicles this was a popular option.

Over the years these transportation options have become more popular throughout the world. The invention of dispatch services and radio communications helped to make these options more popular. One major part of the history of these cabs has been the ability to get cabs to be similar in many ways as a means of maintenance ease. Checker worked to help with manufacturing taxis but after the company stopped making cabs in 1982 other companies have begun to make their own models to be used for cabs. The Toyota Comfort, which is commonly used in Japan and other parts of Asia, is by far the most notable of these.

The history of taxi cabs is one that is long and has evolved from standard horse drawn vehicles to today's vehicles. Many vehicles have been made from specialized groups like Checker and Toyota's Comfort imprint while all sorts of features have been added to these vehicles over the years. These features make the taxi cab one of the most versatile transportation options over the course of history.
